Anthropic hires former judge Tino Cuéllar to lead global affairs

Anthropic named former California Supreme Court justice Tino Cuéllar as its first chief global affairs officer. He previously served in the Obama White House, worked on nuclear-risk policy and co-led research that informed California’s SB 53.

The role places legal judgement and international policy closer to corporate strategy, at a moment when model access, safety rules and government contracts are intensifying.

Cuéllar is stepping off Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust, reducing one potential governance overlap. His appointment does not by itself resolve tensions between commercial growth and public-interest commitments.

Boards should clarify how policy leaders influence launch, lobbying and escalation decisions. Public reporting should distinguish independent oversight from management advocacy.

Anthropic is treating global affairs as a core operating function, not a communications add-on.
